Nissan Sentra: CVT Transmission Lemon Law Cases

December 2024
Nissan Sentra CVT transmission system lemon law cases California

Nissan CVT Transmission Problems

Nissan Sentra, and other Nissan models, CVT transmission system problems reported in model years 2021 and newer — everything from engine stalls to aggressively shaking.

Nissan’s CVT (continuously variable transmission) has had on-going problems since they began using it in 1992. In spite of Nissan’s efforts to improve their CVT transmission, reliability concerns persist to this day. According to recent reports, the 2024 Sentra (which is currently under a recall by Nissan) is facing issues with the left-had driveshaft which can cause transmission fluid leak leading to potential loss of power.

In some cases, multiple transmission systems are being replaced under the factory warranty, but the problems continue to reoccur. Customers have reported experiencing costly repairs and frequent visits to the maintenance shop, raising questions about the overall quality of these transmissions.

Aside from the inconvenience, frustration, and time involved with constant trips to the Nissan dealership, a major complaint with models like the Altima, Rogue, and Sentra have been known to experience issues with their CVT including slipping, jerking, lurching, stalling, and lack of power when accelerating are often attributed to potential defects in the transmission design and components.

Lack of power when accelerating can compromise the car’s performance and safety on the road as it struggles to gain speed quickly when needed, potentially causing hazardous situations like difficulty merging into traffic or responding promptly to sudden changes in road conditions, or when the vehicle loses all power and leaves you stranded.

The video below provides a clear demonstration of how the belt and pulley system operates in a typical Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

Does Your Nissan Shake, Rattle & Roll?

Not ALL Nissans – or other vehicles with a CVT transmission – are lemons, but yours may be a lemon if you have taken it to the Nissan dealership multiple times for the exact same transmission problems such as:

  • Loss of power
  • Hesitating when shifting
  • Responding slowly when accelerating
  • Shuddering, shaking or vibrating
  • Activation of the Check Engine warning light
  • CVT Error warning light

If your Nissan has been taken to the Nissan dealership multiple times and repairs have been made under the original manufacturer’s warranty for the same defect, and that defect substantially impairs your use, value, or safety, you may be entitled to relief under the lemon law.

Still not sure whether your Nissan vehicle with a CVT transmission system can be considered a lemon under the California Lemon Law? Give us a call for a FREE case review!
